Patching Up Quilt Top

Back in August, I posted about this straight-edge whirligig/tessellation cross quilt that I was in the process of making. I pulled the blocks out a couple weeks ago and pieced them together into a baby quilt top. I needed some comfort.

Making this quilt top was so therapeutic for me. I know this is a tad personal, but since I know many of you understand how sewing and quilt making can have healing effects on you, I think it's okay to share here. A couple weeks ago I was thrilled to find out that my husband and I were expecting our third child. Sadly, I experienced a miscarriage shortly thereafter. While I was dealing with the grief that comes with a lost pregnancy, I finished this quilt top. I'm calling it Patching Up, an appropriate name for a quilt top that came together under these circumstances.

I may add an outer border to encase those blocks and give an edge for the binding so it doesn't cut off any of the blocks themselves. The back will have a strip of five blocks between two pieces of the same fabric. I figure I have plenty of time to finish this one, so it will likely be something I work on here and there for a while. I'll continue to post my progress as I work on it.

I'm so sorry to hear your sad news. It's so hard when things don't work out how you hope and plan. I wish there was something I could do for you. I do like how your quilts is turning out. I actually made three simple tied baby quilts while we were hoping and waiting to have a baby. I think you need something to get your through. Those quilts have never been used. Ironically, I didn't end up using them for our kids when we did finally get pregnant. It was just therapy. Thinking of you as you work through this time.

Brooke, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I cried reading your post. I experienced my first miscarriage 6 weeks ago with my fifth pregnancy. I found quilting to be very therapeutic as well. (I made 3 quilts in a week.) I know this sounds hollow and probably everyone has told you that "it gets better with time", but I have found that it truly does. I still cry at times, but day by day, I continue to heal and I know you will as well. Wishing you comfort at this time!

So sorry to hear about your loss but I'm glad you felt "we" were close enough to share it. I like the way you chose the name for the quilt to remember your grief/healing time.

I'm so sorry to hear this news. We all pour our emotions into our quilts and thank goodness we have them. Keep quilting and take special care of yourself.

Brooke,
I am very sorry to hear about your loss. I, too, have miscarried and know that the loss is devastating. My husband and I actually have experienced 4 miscarriages, but are also blessed with 4 children. You will grieve your loss for as long as it takes and the loss will always be a part of you. Take care of yourself. What better way than quilting or doing anything you enjoy and find peace in to help you get through such a difficult time.

I'm glad you shared, but so sorry you needed to. I have had two miscarriages and I wasn't so constructive with my grief. that's a lovely quilt top.

You will never forget but it will get better.

Your quilt top is just beautiful. Thanks for sharing your story. I had a miscarriage just months after having my first and only child. It was very difficult for me to deal with and I wish that I had something at the time to help work through it. Take care.
