WIP Wed 8/13/14: The one with all the quilt top beginnings

Now that I'm back into the swing of sewing again, I want to try harder to blog. I have a tendency to post things to Instagram because it's so quick and easy, but I forget that my blog serves as a sewing journal so I can document all the things I make. Needless to say, these pics are all from my IG feed (@pitterputterstitch). 

Let's get on with the WIP part of this post, eh?

Flower Box

I bought this V & Co pattern, which I really love, and then pulled together a group of navy, teal, and peach fabrics. For the background, I picked this Moda Bella teak, and I'm not sure I love it. In fact, I think I may not like it. I'm debating between recutting my background fabric using a lighter neutral or just pushing through and finishing the blocks as is.

Arkansas Florence Crossroads

This was such a fast top to put together. I used Denyse Schmidt's Florence with coordinating solids for the main blocks and Le Creme dots for the background. I plan to make another one of these soon.

New Star

This paper pieced star is called the New Star and I got the pattern from Quilter's Cache. The Salt Lake Modern Quilt Guild is making a charity quilt using paper pieced stars and this color scheme. When I made this block, I forgot to use the designated solid background, so lucky me, I get to keep this one. It'll turn into a pillow eventually.

Neon Plus

In an effort to make a quilt for everyone in my family, I started on this neon plus quilt for my niece, Chamy. She's 19 and loves neon. When my dad was sick, she spent a lot of time at my parents' house tackling projects that needed to be done. She even refinished my parents' 11x40 foot deck! She's awesomesauce so I wanted to make her a quilt right away.

Wee Wander Pink and Orange

When Sarah Jane's Wee Wander line came out, I bought a fat quarter bundle of the whole line. This is such a sweet collection and I wanted to make coordinating quilts for my two girls. I played around with layouts and really liked this one, but The Middle has a mind of her own and convinced me to change it up. I'll post the final layout when I can take real pictures with my camera.

Wee Wander Blue and Green

For The Baby's quilt, I made a variety of patchwork blocks. I've since sashed them all in a cream solid and then I'll add a border around each block with green and blue solids.

Strips

I haven't made a small-strip striped quilt before. I pulled a focal fabric and then grabbed blues, reds, oranges, and greens to go with it. I pressed and trimmed all these blocks last night and settled on the final layout. I'll piece the top tonight. That'll put me at five quilt tops to baste, quilt, and bind. Not bad for a month's worth of sewing.

WIP Wednesday: 3/5/14

I haven't had a lot of things going on in terms of sewing for the last little while because I've been so busy with work and school. But, after writing a couple of big papers, I needed a bit of fabric therapy. One of my quilt goals I set for the year was to use my Anna Maria Horner True Colors fabrics to make a value quilt. I used my Accuquilt Go Baby cutter and my parallelogram die and set to work on this:

I used two fat-eighth bundles and some Kona white for the top chevrons. I want the quilt a bit wider, but I don't have enough fabric to cut out more parallelograms. My leftover fabric pieces are triangles so I've been toying with the idea of adding a border of flying geese, but I'm still thinking about it. Next week is my spring break, so hopefully, I can get more work done on it.

WIP Wednesday 11/13/13: Quilty ADD makes me feel like I can't get anything DONE!

I don't know what my problem is, but lately, I keep wanting to start new projects without following through on others. Here's a peek at what's in progress at my house this week:

Navy, teal, and peach Flower Box quilt (pattern from V and Co.). All fabric cut; one block pieced.

EPP project using jewels and hexis; blue, green, orange prints pulled from my scrap bins.

Accuquilt diamond quilt. I'll have a tutorial for this one when I finally get around to piecing the top.

Pixelated camera quilt. I've pieced 1/4 of the blocks into rows. I need to come back to this one asap, but I also need to have no one in the house to mess up the layout so I don't get confused on where the blocks should go.

Labyrinth quilt. This one should have been done by now. All I need to do still is add an outer border and then it's ready for basting. Sometimes, though, the thought of cutting and adding a border is SO NOT what I want to work on.

Oranges and bacon pillow (thanks, Marci for the nickname). This one is a result of me not knowing what football laces look like when I was making my nephew's pixelated football quilt. There are a bazillion layouts that I came up with, but haven't been able to settle on one. Plus, I have to make one more X block and I've been putting that part off.

And finally, plusses in blue. This one is all pieced and awaiting basting. I've been putting it off because I hate basting and if I'm going to move my kitchen table and clean the spray residue from the floor afterward, I'm going to baste more than one quilt at a time. As soon as I add the border to the labyrinth quilt and finish the camera quilt, all three of these will get basted.

I don't like this feeling of not being able to finish a project all the way through before starting a new one. I know I've said this before, but it feels almost paralyzing. Maybe I'm just in a finishing funk or something. I hope to complete at least one project before next week though so I can feel like I'm accomplishing something. Especially with Christmas coming so soon.

WIP Wednesday 9/11/13

My computer has been in the shop for nearly two weeks now and it’s driving me a little batty! So that means that you’ll have to endure cell phone pictures of my WIPs this week.

Finished this week

My baby turned two this past weekend. She’s officially exited the baby stage and is in full-on toddler mode. I have mixed emotions about it because I’m pretty sure she’s going to be my last child. Anyway, for her birthday, I made her a #geranium tunic using Made by Rae’s pattern. And I think it turned out pretty stinkin’ cute! There are definitely things I need to do better next time (like pay attention to where my 3/8” seam line is on my machine – I used the 5/8” line when sewing the bodice, but it still fits!), but I was really pleased with how it turned out.

Instead of using one print, I used two Lizzy House prints, a Hello Pilgrim flower print and some green Pearl Bracelets.

I still need to add the buttons to the back, so I'm hoping I don't put that off too long.

It was my dad's birthday last week too. Every time he calls me on the phone, he sings, "I just called to say 'I love you'" by Lionel Richie. So for his birthday, I made him this wall-hanging. Eventually, I'll make myself a pillow like it too.

In progress this week

I'm having wrist and elbow surgery in a few weeks so I'm trying to get this next project crossed off my list ASAP before I lose the use of my arm for six weeks.

I used Red Pepper Quilts' Labyrinth pattern to make this brown and blue quilt top. I plan to add another outer border to finish it off. I really like the color combo. Brown isn't usually a color that I use much in quilts, but I like how it pairs with the blue here. The top came together pretty quickly too. I'll definitely be making another one in the future.

WIP Wednesday 1/23/2013

This is my first WIP Wednesday post of 2013. I thought it'd be a good time to check in and post a bit of my finish it 2013 progress. I've neglected my camera lately, so these photos are courtesy of Instagram (@pitterputterstitch).

Last year, I pieced a few quilt tops and then set them aside while I worked on other projects. My first order of business for 2013 was to get those quilt tops quilted. They were all bee quilts so I chose to send them off for quilting.

Kayli quilted my Sew Beautiful Bee quilt top from 2011, Circle of Circle of Circle of Flying Geese. She did such a great job! I've cut the binding strips for this and just need to finish making the binding so I can cross this quilt off my list.

Barbie quilted my SLMQG bee quilt from 2011, my 1001 Peeps Supernova quilt (photo courtesy of Barbie). I love the wavy line quilting she did! The binding strips are cut and ready to turn into binding for this one too.

The last quilt top I sent off for quilting is my Gradated Mod Mosaic quilt top, my 2012 Sew Beautiful Bee quilt. I haven't gotten this one back yet, but I'm really excited for it!

Next up on my WIP list is my Madrona Road Challenge quilt. I initially wanted to make a quilt with a lot of Lynne's ET Phone Home blocks,

but then I changed course and went with Anna Maria Horner's Spinning Stars pattern instead. I've been wanting to make a quilt like this so I figured I may as well kill two birds with one stone.

I hope to finish this one up next week in time for the Modern Quilt Guild's deadline.

I also finished a quilt top for my new nephew.

I plan to baste this one when I baste my Madrona Road quilt. Then I need to get back to this baby, my Castle Peeps Lucky Square quilt. The mister is really looking forward to having a quilt of his own. This pattern is by Jessica Kelly and is for sale here.

WIP Wednesday 6/6/2012

It's been a while since I've linked up to WIP Wednesday. I'm finding myself wanting to stray from my to-do list so this post will help serve as a reminder of the things I MUST get done before the end of June - and time is running out. Nothing like a good splash of cold water to wake you up in the morning, right? So, let's get to it.

My current #1 priority is to attach the binding to my EZ Dresden mini quilt for which I'll be posting a tutorial on Friday for the blog hop. I've got a teeny bit of hand-stitching to do still as well. I've already shown a couple sneak peeks, but here's another.

The next priority item on my plate right now is this melon patch quilt. My best friend is getting re-married at the end of the month and I really wanted to make her and her new hubby a quilt. I've got my work cut out for me to get this finished by the time we head out to Oregon in a few weeks! The quilt will be four blocks by four blocks. Each block measures 16 inches, I think (or is it 18?), so it'll be a nice sized throw quilt. The fabrics are Anna Maria Horner's Innocent Crush (Potpourri colorway) and Kona white.

I'm still considering this next block a WIP since I haven't made it to the post office yet (sorry, Angela!).

For May in the Sew Beautiful Bee, Angela asked for improv pineapple blocks using this tutorial. She sent out a bunch of Hawaiian prints for us to use as the center square with blues, greens, and oranges for the strips and corners. I'm so excited to see her quilt come together. It's going to be gorgeous!

This last block isn't a WIP for me, but I think it still is for Sam, and since I haven't blogged about it yet, I'm including it here. In our local guild bee, La Beeda Loca, Sam asked us to make paper-pieced single girl blocks. I've done a bit of paper piecing and I still find it a bit challenging. I'm not sure what it is about it though. If anyone has any tips they'd like to share, I welcome them!

That wraps up what I've been working on the last little while. I've made a couple simple dresses for my three-year-old that I haven't had the chance to photograph yet. I'll hopefully post about those one of these days. WIP: The Lots of Blocks Edition

Welcome Wednesday! This week I worked on mainly the twin quilts, which I'll post about in a day or two, but today is all about quilt blocks.

First up is Granny Square #3, featuring blue and orange. For as much as I love orange, I don't have nearly as many orange scraps as I thought before starting this project. So there are going to be a lot of repeats when this quilt is finished.

I mentioned last week that I made four x&+ blocks for a charity quilt the Salt Lake Modern Quilt Guild (SLMQG) is making. I love how scrappy these are. The quilt is going to look great!

WIP Wednesday: Granny, Melons, and Fabric

I've been slowly chipping away at my to-do list this week. Let's get on with it, shall we?

Accomplished this Week

I managed to make another Granny Squares block - a Halloween version.

I also put together this bee block for Andrea. The directions she gave us calls this a melon block. I'm not sure if that's the correct name or not, but I sure do like it. I want to make a pillow out of this block for my living room, but with each quadrant rotated so the finished block looks like a giant cathedral window instead.

I also finished my Sew Beautiful Bee 2011 quilt top, which I'm calling Circle of Circle of Circle of Flying Geese. Read about it here.

I also made some x&+ blocks, but haven't taken any photos yet. Stay tuned.

No Progress Made

I haven't worked on any of my other WIPs. I realized too that I need to start yet another quilt for my BFF who's getting married in June. She and her new hubs needs a quilt, methinks.
